Visit to the New York Central Museum in Elkhard, IN

After a rainy fotoshooting in Porter, IN and a non successful search of a good location near Gary, I am driving eastwards. In the afternoon of June 23, 2007 the weather clear a bit and sometimes also the sun comes out. Elkhard is the next location to visit. Parallel to the main street into the city the CN line is running. On the foundations of a torn down building I park the car.

CN 2660 C44-9W and SD40-2 CN 5386 are pulling a mixed freight downtown where the station is.

Opposite to the historic Elkhard station, which is still used by Amtrak, I discover the New York Central museum! Despite it is already 5 pm, the normal closing hour on Sunday, the friendly crew in the museum lets me in, as they heared I came from far away Germany. They will close the building in a quarter hour, but the open area is open until 7 pm.Es ist fünf Uhr Abends, das Museum schließt um fünf.

Inside the Streamliner car.

The freight station.

The NYC streamliner train is lead by an E-unit in the classic NYC livery.

An old tank car.

The large outside collection contains also this 4-8-2 steamer and an old electric car from the South Shore Railroad. They have installed picnic tables and railfanning platforms close to the tracks of the neighboring active rail line.

Another highlight is this GG1. She is painted in her last livery from PennCentral and a little weatherd - but still very impressive.

Old caboose and historic derriks are standing besides restored reefer cars.

Elkhard station. Behind the signal bridge CP9770, an AC4400CW awaits highball for her container train.
